We all have to walk through this phase.Getting a job means you have cleared one step. Now you have to focus on your work, behavior, relationship with co-workers, boss, and client.   This might be too much on your first day. You will be nervous once you enter office. Your HR Department will help you and guide you. Be on Time whether it is a job, inter view or attending a meeting.  As we all say time is money. Believe me it is.   Always be on time. This creates a good impression, It shows how much responsible you are at your job and what kind of attitude you carry towards the same.Rule number 1: Reach on time. Never forget this rule.  Get up little early than regular days for important meetings, interview etc.  This will help you finish your daily routine on time, you can eat proper breakfast and then leave early for the venue.   You may not get stuck in traffic and you won’t be worried about reaching late.Be ConfidentBeing Confident revels a lot about you.  It’s about self confidence.  If you cannot be confident and doubt yourself who is going to be confident about hiring you.   If company hires you they see whether you will be able to handle your task, responsibilities given to you as they are going to rely on your work to deliver to clients.  Always be confident about your skills.Introduce YourselfOnce you enter offic e, get in touch with HR Department.   Normally your team lead or your seniors will help you with this process. They will introduce you to the team. With this introduction session you will be at least familiar with faces and few names. You can further connect with them on lunch time for further talks.Know your Task for the DayOnce your Introduction is over. Go to your desk.  Make yourself comfortable.   If the task is given to you start doing it. If not then reach out to your lead or senior and ask them about your task. Ask them how you should start, what reference you have to go through. Whom you can contact if you have any doubts.Make sure you have your notes ready with you. Write everything your senior tells you this will help you once you start doing your task rather than wondering what was told and again disturbing your seniors. This will create a bad impression on your first day and who wants that so take your diary along with you to make notes of it.Talk to co-workers around As it will be your first day and you will be very new to company and its environment. Try to talk to people around, your colleagues will give you time. Generally on first day you won’t have much work to do so make sure you use this opportunity and time well. Attend Meetings, attend celebration or go to team lunch if its happening that day. Make New Friends now. As your college time is over and you have started a new journey you may get good friends at your office which will help you when you are In need. As they have spent more time then you in company they will teach you how to deal with any situation around. So go and have lunch and make new friends.Share Your Work UpdatesBefore you leave make sure you have met your senior or lead and provided them with the updates about your work.   Inform them about what you have learnt today, how was your first day at office if they ask you. Is #FollowFriday on Twitter a Waste of Time

Is #FollowFriday on Twitter a Waste of Time I think that #Follow Friday or otherwise known as #FF is a cutie of a hashtag.  I also think its a huge waste of time. It is soooo abused!   I’ve been meaning to pen this blog for a while.   In fact every Friday when I’m in Twitter I end up creating finger-nail marks in my desk when I see the #FF hashtag doing the rounds. #FF has been around since 2009 and is now a Friday staple of Twitter (along with #woofwednesday and a recent favourite  of mine #WineWednesday I have 2 kids under 7) #FF drives me nuts: Apparently 80% of tweets are read within an hour of them being sent, so they will lose relevance pretty quick â€" even if they seemed relevant in the first place. I often get #FFd and I am really flattered, and I want to say “thanks”.   Sometimes, though, I see that a lot of other people have been #FFd in the same tweet and I know if I either retweet the tweet or reply then everyone mentioned in the tweet will be hounded by me â€" and I don’t want to do that. I get that the tweeter wants to say thanks for either being engaging or tweeting helpful stuff… but it would be great (and more effective for me and them) if the #FF was more cleverly crafted. Follow Friday What is it good for? I really rate #FF.   They help me see who rates who and also help me decide who to follow (isn’t that the point?) Surely when you use the #FF hashtag you want to: Demonstrate your specialism as a recruiter Stroke someone’s hair (admit it, you love it!) (…clients, candidates, suppliers, thought leaders?) Attract attention and raise your profile (this is a very important tactic for the recruiters I work with) The Ultimate Way to #FF Of course mention the account you rate, but tell me why â€" and don’t forget key words and hashtags.  Stick with the just the one and youll be more engaging ad real: You may even be clever recruiters and use Buffer to schedule the tweet. (After all, I’m not expecting you to set your clock for Friday 08:00 so you can setup your #FF.) How about being Sub-Zero Cool with #FF Hashtags? Why not create a list of all of the people you rate and regularly sharing this list.  I’ve created a Twitter list and you can subscribe to it here. I’ll be adding to it whenever I find someone I want to #FF. Don’t just do 1, do several (one at a time), and as mentioned above use Buffer to schedule them (either all on the same day, or every Friday for the next few weeks â€" get organised!) And if you’re lucky enough to be #FFd â€" say thanks!   But you don’t have to #FF back â€" be authentic please! Get the App There’s a cute Android app called  Follow Friday Assistant.   It looks at who you’ve interacted with and helps you decide who to setup as a #FF.   It’s pretty cute! Get Cracking Think about looking at your home page on Twitter and looking for the Twitter accounts that make you pause and read.   Why is this this and can you put into words what make you stop and stare?   Then craft a beautiful tweet to engage your own followers, stroke the hair of the Tweeter you’re going to #FF and attract attention to your own stream.   Add some value and you’ll be engaging. While we all have to find work-appropriate shoes, theres always still a way to show off your personality and style. Finding a versatile shoe may require incorporating comfort, style, and classic color choices. Being career-driven doesnt have to mean boring shoes are part of the outfit. Whether you choose an all-American classic style like penny loafers, a basic black pump, or funky wedges, you can add flair with small touches like bows, studs, or patterns. Cowgirl boots  might seem a little out of the ordinary for an office, but on a casual Friday before going line dancing with friends, they can be perfect. Having to change shoes from work to the weekend is always an inconvenience, but finding shoes with a chunky heel, discrete pattern, or bold colors can be just the right touch to dress up or down. Enjoy pairing exotic boots with fashionable outdoor wear, and have fun bringing a little Western flair to work. Power Heels Consider your shoes as a power play, whether you go with something bold, unique, or with an uncommon pattern. Youll show that youre not only serious about your job but that you have style and will make a statement in the boardroom and the dance floor. Dont be afraid to walk into the office in some leopard-print high heels or studded flats. A nice pantsuit can be dressed up with playful kitten heels or embellished styles, and ankle boots can be a great addition to a monochromatic dress or color scheme. Fashion and Function Oftentimes, we compromise style for comfort and practicality, but theres no need to do that with the right shoe choice. The most comfortable shoes you can find will vary based on your foot width and the types of activities you perform at work. A kitten heel, low-heeled boots, or a strapping pair of mules are all viable options for office attire. Doll heels and Mary Jane shoes are remarkable choices as they have just the right incline, and the strap keeps everything in place. Mary Janes are also the perfect amount of sexy without overdoing it. If youre fortunate enough to work in an casual office environment, dont forget to consider fashionable sneakers. Perhaps only certain offices will allow tennis shoes or sneakers, but if youre in one where you think you can pull it off, go for it. Any shoe can work and make a statement regardless of how fancy, comfortable, or simple it is. Make office politics work for you Everyone stop working right now. Ask yourself these questions: 1. Does my boss like having one-on-one meetings with me? 2. Do my co-workers like going to lunch with me? If you cannot answer yes to both these questions, then you are focusing on the wrong stuff at work. It doesnt matter how well you do your job. If you cant get along with the people at work, no one will want to work with you. Larry works at a company where new employees are on a one-year probation while they do four rotations. Larry has had reviews after three of his four rotations. The third reviewer told him he is unprofessional. When Larry asked other reviewers why they had not told him this they said, Management told us not to. Larrys interpersonal skills are so lacking that the company decided early on that they want him out after a year. Larry realized it was too late to save his job, but he thought there might be hope for his ego, so he went to a lawyer. The lawyer said it is not illegal to be a bad manager or to run a company poorly. Larrys problem is that he cannot gauge how people expect him to act in a given situation. And he cannot adjust how he conducts himself depending on the circumstances. For some people, this skill comes naturally they are chameleons who can mirror other peoples moods. Chameleons know what to say when their bosss pet gerbil dies and they know what to say when a co-worker suggests a date. Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Computer, for example, acts differently when he meets with Wall St. analysts than when he meets will Dell customer service reps. Some people have one way of conducting themselves and have no idea how to change for a given situation. These are the people who make inappropriate jokes at a client meeting or are too stiff and formal at a company picnic. Chameleons generally disgust these people, but Ive got news for you: chameleons dont get fired for being unprofessional. Most people who hate office social dynamics think people have to change who they are to succeed. But good social skills at work are really a reflection of empathy for the people around you. Anyone who is being their best self kind, considerate, expressive, interested in others will instinctively do the right thing at the office. If you are being your best self, it wont matter that there are difficult personalities at the office. So stop blaming the people you work with for being misfits and morons. People with good social skills can get along with almost anyone; Im not saying you have to like everyone, Im saying that you have to make them like you: Figure out what matters to them, what makes them tick, and then speak to that when you interact. I think you will find, though, that once you get someone at work to like you, you will like them back. When the ugly guy asks you to dance, he is only ugly until he asks you and then his discerning taste makes him more attractive. So back to Larry. He is young, so he asked his parents what to do. They said, You cant change other people, but you can change yourself. (If Larrys parents wrote a career advice column, I would read it. This is good advice for almost any interpersonal problem at work, at home, anywhere.) So he is seeing a career coach to help him with interpersonal skills: Good idea. Work is not only about getting things done but also getting people to like you. I applaud those of you are hard workers. But lets face it, most work is easily replaceable, especially when five hundred people would love to have your job. Your personality, however, is not so easily replaced. So get people to appreciate you for your interpersonal skills and you will not only have job security; youll probably have a spot on the fast track.

By 2025, millennials will make up roughly 75% of the world’s workforce. According to findings in the EWS, they are also most likely to leaveâ€"40% of them will look for a new job in the next 12 months. With so many Gen Y employees making up the workforce, HR professionals can’t afford not to take notice. Only 30% of employers said turnover/retention is their top HR concern. This lack of retention focus exacerbates the disconnect between employers and their employees. 45 percent of all workers believe a company’s social media outlet is influential when choosing a new employer, yet only 27 percent of companies believe social media outlets are influential on how a candidate views their organization. The way we tell our stories is flawed Think about your favorite story. It could be a film, a novel, or even a biography of someone you admire. Now, imagine that story with all of the struggles, hard times, and failures removed. You’re probably left with something dull, bordering on nonsensical. The lesson? That those failures and struggles are essential to any story, including your own.We set out to teach that lesson.The way we want the world to see usWhen we’re asked to talk about ourselves, most of the time we talk about our achievements and successes. When I interview someone and ask them “What are you most proud of?”, they almost always talk about “that time they won a big client,” or “doubled revenue in a year.” That’s understandable, but it misses something.When I tell them about the moments I’m most proud of, they’re related to the struggles I’ve gone through. After hearing this, people suddenly remember that they’ve overcome things that really make them proud as well. They’re often no t connected to a career, but these difficult moments still taught them valuable lessons and skills they later applied to their jobs. In other words, struggle can teach us things.And yet, these aren’t the stories we tell about ourselves. From social media to our resumes, we present only the ups, the high points. This leaves out half the story, all the hard work behind those successes. Telling our own story in a way that really creates value and genuine pride requires tackling those struggles and understanding how they fit into our lives.With that in mind, we set out to create something to demonstrate this idea and allow people to learn it for themselves. We created a free worksheet to help you reflect on your struggles and achievements.How it worksYou start by thinking about a significant period in your life. That could mean starting, as they say, from the beginning. Or, you could simply look at your professional life. This will get the juices flowing. Then, mark memorable moments on the worksheet with dots. You can use colorful pens, red for struggles, green for “high moments.” Be as creative as you like. The only rule is to keep the good ones higher above the main line and the ones that weren’t so great lower.Now comes the part where you literally connect the dots of your story. Then get thinking: what’s the relationship between the high points and the low points? Do they follow one another in a pattern? Did one lead to another? Think about what you learned during the hard times and how you may have applied it to succeed later.We had many friends and colleagues fill this out and were delighted to watch them look at what makes them proud in a totally new way.
